Practically daily, I question this obsession with needing to know what’s really going on in the world. Almost feeling a sense of addiction to the latest clown act. It’s all so crazy, what’s the next act….it all just builds and builds and I don’t want to miss when it topples….that sense of FOMO (fear of missing out) that many people these days experience in the world of social media. I personally think of Substack as a social media of substance (vs the ‘junk food bites you get on Twitter, FB, tick-tock etc) but nevertheless it’s become an addiction, and I can’t help but wonder if it would be better to be in my metaphorical temple, meditating, spending quiet time with nature. I guess it’s all about balance…and I’m glad I read this post…thanks 🙏

Thank you for taking the time to read and respond, Freedom. Watching the television news has become a compulsive act of masochism. Just like recovering from drug addiction, it can be eliminated by gradually tapering off. In my own case, I started by removing CNN and MSNBC from my cable subscription. After recognizing that FOX News was essentially no better (broadcasting the same fear porn on an hourly basis), I had that turned off. I am happy to report that Monday I'm returning my cable box to Spectrum and plan to begin living again.

By-and-large, I find Substack a pleasant alternative to Facebook, Twitter, or Quora. There are no arguments. There are discussions. And when a favored author (e.g. Robert Malone) posts something too technical for my understanding, I have no qualms about simply deleting it without reading it.

Substack is more of a pastime than an addiction and, as a recovering news addict, I feel nothing but compassion for those who have to repeatedly tune in to hear the same disturbing hints of news on the horizon that the 24/7 media poisons us with.

Absolutely agree, people who aren’t aware of alt media are in for a rude awakening. I am beyond grateful for the Substack community; for the great writers and also for the thoughtful commenters, many whose names I now recognize and feel like family in a sense.

🥰🙏

I used to listen to Allan Watts on KPFK as he explained Buddhism in his special joyful way.

Thanks for this reminder. There’s a great deal of wisdom at our beck and call if we but look.

Many places in America have Tibet in them now. Three lineage holders are here now, they don't worry and should never have to again, if we are careful with them. If there ever was a karmic debt it would be too much for me to contemplate, but it is relatively easy to take care of each other. I do that.
